Purim is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from annihilation, as told in The Book of Esther. This year, the festival runs from sundown to sundown, March 2-3.
The occasion is both solemn and celebratory. There are public readings of Esther, and there are masquerade parties; special prayers in synagogues, and yummy triangular cookies called Hamantaschen.
